McConnell Calls on House to Lift Drought on Reform
February 29, 2008 by senatormcconnell
Columbia, SC – After members of the House Judiciary Committee moved to adjourn debate on the DNA database bill and a bill dealing with Sentencing Reform, President Pro Tempore Glenn McConnell called on the House of Representatives to spend some time working on those reform issues in order to save South Carolina lives.
Senator McConnell said, “The Senate passed a series of reform bills that were designed to make every day a safer one for South Carolina families. Unfortunately, the House has consistently delayed consideration of these crime-fighting bills. I hope that the citizens of South Carolina will call their Representatives and say enough is enough. That it is time for the House to debate and pass these bills to make our state safer. As our state works out of a water drought, we don’t need to deal with a drought of reform.”

McConnell. “I’ve always strived to keep my constituents more informed about our efforts in the legislature. I think this website will allow me to accomplish this goal.”
Smart immigration slowdown
February 26, 2008 by senatormcconnell
The refusal by the state House of Representatives this week to accept Senate amendments to a bill aimed at illegal immigration was the right move. Now let’s hope the conference committee appointed to resolve the differences can toughen the legislation.
The committee’s prime concerns should be the elimination of an employee verification option known as the federal I-9 form. A persuasive argument has been made by two Lowcountry senators — Chip Campsen and Glenn McConnell — that the option makes the verification process a farce.
That’s been proven by the failed federal system that embodies the I-9 form verification process. The flaw is obvious. Social Security cards and out-of-state driver’s licenses, which are too easily falsified, can be used to obtain I-9 clearance. Under the federal law, employers are prohibited from examining the underlying documentation. Read more

February 19, 2008 by senatormcconnell
At a press conference today at the State House, President Pro Tempore, Senator Glenn McConnell (R-Charleston), unveiled, Energizing the Future, a proposed energy efficiency legislative package.
“Do we wait until we reach a crisis, or do we take positive steps to ensure that our energy sources remain plentiful and affordable?” asked Senator McConnell. “It’s a quality of life issue. It’s about our state. It’s about jobs. It’s about our environment. It’s about our citizens.”
P&C: Legislation proposes state energy overhaul
February 19, 2008 by senatormcconnell
While South Carolina has traditionally lagged behind its neighbors in modern energy standards, one of the state’s leading conservationists called a group of energy proposals unveiled Wednesday “a great moment of awakening.”
Dana Beach, executive director of the Charleston-based Coastal Conservation League, stood beside representatives from the state’s utilities and electric co-ops as Senate President Pro Tem Glenn McConnell outlined the legislative package that seeks to make the state more energy-efficient and more reliant on renewable sources.
P&C: S.C. Senate aims to spur Congress to act on immigration
February 19, 2008 by senatormcconnell
As part of a multifaceted approach to illegal immigration, the state Senate on Wednesday issued a call for a national constitutional convention in a strategy aimed at forcing Congress to act.
Senate President Pro Tem Glenn McConnell first introduced the concept in October after Washington negotiators failed to agree on a new immigration policy. The goal is not to see a convention convene, McConnell said. Rather, it’s to pressure Congress.
WSPA: Bill Would Allow Churches, Non-Profits to Host Gambling
February 19, 2008 by senatormcconnell
A bill passed by a state Senate subcommittee would allow churches and other non-profit groups to raise money through gambling. The bill says state laws against gambling would not apply to non-profit organizations that organize games with cards or dice when the activity is being done for fundraising and is of “limited duration”.
The bill passed in subcommittee Thursday and now goes to the Senate Judiciary Committee, which is chaired by Sen. Glenn McConnell, R-Charleston. McConnell is also the sponsor of the gambling bill.
